More information

On this 14 day self-drive itinerary, you will experience some of the most vibrant and interesting cities that Germany has to offer. The most populated country in the European Union, Germany is a dynamic country known for its history - both recent and centuries old - as well as it's natural beauty. From the black forest, to the cosmopolitan city of Berlin, there is something within Germany that will appeal to everyone - and which is just asking to be discovered on your holiday.

Day 1 - 2 Munich.

For your first two days, you will explore the southern city of Munich. The capital of Bavaria, Munich is perhaps most famously known for the two week Oktoberfest which showcases the beer brewing traditions of Bavaria. Munich not only is a fascinating city to explore itself, but also a great base for exploring the surrounding area - with the Austrian city of Salzburg a short train ride away, or the sombre Dachau concentration camp which stands as testament to the cruelty of the Nazi regime, and was the longest running concentration camp during Nazi power.

Day 3 - 4 Stuttgart.

Continuing on your trip around Germany, your next stop will take you to Stuttgart. Known for its automotive heritage, Stuttgart is home to both the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche Museum, both must see places for any fan of Germany automobiles. Stuttgart is an ideal base to explore surrounding sights - such as Lichtenstein castle, or Hohenzollern Castle, or visit the university town of Tubingen. Largely undamaged during the second world war, many of the colourful old buildings are originals, lending an authentic and charming quality to the town.

Day 5 - 6 Frankfurt.

The next stop on your trip will take you to Frankfurt. Whilst known as a financial hub, Frankfurt also hosts vibrant nightlife, boutique shopping, and a modern food scene. Kleinmarkthalle is an ideal place to stop to sample different flavours - with 156 different stalls selling food, produce and flowers within this indoor market. Grouped together on the banks of the River Main, the Museumsufer area can easily keep you occupied for two days - with 39 different museums housed along the banks of the river, or in very close proximity.

Day 7 - 8 Cologne.

Continuing on to Cologne, this city is known for its vibrant energy, and its bustling bar scene. With the majestic Cologne cathedral standing tall in the heart of the city - the third largest Gothic cathedral in the world - the city is also a great one to visit for culture and heritage. Home to many museums, Cologne is also where the first 'Eau de Cologne' originated - and you can learn the history, as well as see the world's oldest fragrance factory at the Fragrance Museum Farina-House.

Day 9 - 10 Hamburg.

Situated along the banks of many canals, Hamburg is a charming city with rich history, and a dynamic cultural scene. Home to the largest miniature model railway in the world, Miniatur Wunderland is a must visit when in Hamburg. With fully realised areas - including a functioning miniature airport, a mountain village with fully operational trains, and areas inspired by Italy, Switzerland, the USA, Patagonia and more - this is an ideal sight for both children and adults alike. The historic buildings of the Alstadt area, such as the Rathaus provide a scenic background for walking, and in your time in Hamburg, you will be able to while away many hours just taking in the sights as you wander through the city.

Day 11 - 13 Berlin.

Your German road trip will end in the vibrant capital of Berlin. A city divided until 1989, Berlin has grown into one of the most progressive and diverse cities in Europe. Known for its bustling nightlife, great bars, historic sights - including the East Side Gallery, Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate - and laidback charm, Berlin is a capital which feels like no other. Over three days you will be able to explore all that Berlin has to offer, and to discover the hidden corners of the city visited not by the tourists, but by the locals who call Berlin home.
