The surrounding shores have been formally declared as a whale sanctuary known as the Cook Islands Exclusive Zone (EEZ) to ensure that these magnificent creatures continue to be protected and have the opportunity to peacefully visit each year. The western side of the island offers great vantage points such as Black Rock to spot the whales.
